Starting A Profitable Blog
I started my blog using WordPress but little did I know that there are 2 kinds of WordPress. Oh yes! There is the free WordPress (wordpress.com) and there is the paid WordPress (wordpress.org). Let us talk a little about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
- You can pay for upgrades (still limitations)
- Won’t be able to monetize unless you are getting 25,000 page views
- Hosted on WordPress server
- Not much options to customize
- Cannot add plugins
- Cannot install custom themes
- Cannot edit HTML
- Full theme support
- All plugins allowed
- Have to pay for hosting
- Have to pay for domain registration
If you are blogging with no intention of making a profit then the free version of WordPress is fine. However, if you intend to have a profitable blog, I will strongly advise you to go with the paid version of WordPress. I started with the free version and it ended up costing me to transfer all my stuff from WordPress.com to WordPress.org. I would suggest that you start with the free version and play around with it until you fully understand before moving to the paid version if you are nervous about it.
There are quite a few blogging platforms but WordPress is the best platform for serious bloggers.

Steps To Starting Your Blog
We will start with the basics. There are three things that you need to know to start your blog.
- Domain Name
So let’s begin the process of starting your blog. First we will go to Bluehost where we will be able to select the package that works best. Bluehost is one of the best hosting companies that I have seen so far and they are the only hosting service that has been officially recommended by WordPress for the past 10 years. There are many other benefits to using Bluehost as your web host:
- Their web-hosting starts at $3.95 per month depending on the length of time you select. The longer the hosting period, the lower the cost per month, so be wise when doing this section.
- The offer a 30 day money back guarantee
- Trained inhouse experts available 24/7
- 1 click WordPress installation
- Over $150 in offers from Google, Bing and other leading sites to build your business
- Migration services
- Free domain
- Easy to use control panel
- Unlimited websites, email accounts and domains
Once you get to Bluehost, it is now time to select the plan. Study each plan carefully before selecting the one that works best for your blog. Depending on your needs there are also other plans when your blog starts growing.
Next you will be asked to document your domain name. Your domain name is very important so do not take this lightly. You should come to this point with your domain name in mind. I would suggest at least 3 names just in case the first one is not available. The domain name you choose should reflect what your blog is about. Think long term when selecting the domain name because you do not want to change the name mid-way. The great thing about Bluehost is your domain name is free if you are hosting with them.
Once the name you have selected is available, you can then provide your account information and select the package you need. You can choose 1 – 3 years. The longer the period, the more you will save and you will lock in these prices.
You do not have to select all the add-ons listed but some of these are important for the protection of your blog. Please look out for part 2 where we will dig deeper into how to start a profitable blog. Remember you will receive a discount if you sign up with this post.
